2009 Start up with Frank Goon Cup

See the result above. I'd shared 3 points sith several top players. After train with Fritz 11 for one and half months i'd beat 2 rated players (Muhammad Ilyas bin mohd Ramdzan and Ahmad Arif bin Abdul Rahim) and lost to three big name (Osric Mooi, Michael Siong and NM Kamal Ariffin) with a victory against anonymous player Mr Yow Keen Mann. As the result i put myself at number 23. Not bad huh. But still can't raise any present.

Fuyyooh!!!!!

Saturday, January 10, I rushed to Johor Bahru town by my lovely Wira Aeroback just to attend the Frank Goon Cup held in the 35th floor at the City Square. Luckily I arrived 10 minutes early.

Unluckily my first game was against one of the big name from Singapore. Guess who? Osric Mooi Kok Onn (big guy in the image below). FIDE rated (2044). Oh shit man. Since I stop playing d4 for White my 2nd move decision take a few minutes when he reply 2....e5. I'm not familiar with Ruy Lopez line, nor the Scotch, Italian or Pianoss game. What's wrong if I used my repertoire King's Gambit Accepted or King's Gambit Decline?? My answer is not with this guy.

Then my game went like this 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.c3??? passive, loss tempo, Yes I did a Test. Let's White play defensive. 3...Nf6 Is it a Petrov defense??? I'm not sure.

4.Qc2 d5 5.exd5 Qxd5 6.d3 Bf5 7.Nh4 Bd7 8.Be3 Be7 9.Nd2 Ng4 10.Nhf3 Nxe3 11.fxe3 12.e4 Qf7
13.0-0-0 Qxa2 (poisoned pawn???)

14.Qb3 Qxb3 (Osric said I should play Nb3... Thanks bro) 15.Nxb3 0-0 16.h4 h6 17.Be2 a5 18.Kc2 a4 19. Nbd1 a3 (God, I'm going to die!!!) 20.b3 b5 21.d4 fxe4 22.Nxe4 Bf5 23.Bd3 exd4 24.Rhe1 dxc3 25.Bxb4 Nb4+

26.Kxc3 Bxe4 27.Rxe4 Bd6 28.Bc4+ Kh8 29.Rxd6 Na2+ 30.Kc2 cxd6 31.Re3 d5! (minority attack, I called it)32.Bd3 Nb4+ 33.Kb2 a2+ 34.Ka1 Rfc8 35.Bb1 Rc1 36.Kb2 a1=Q+## (0-1)

By this game, one of my chess colleague; Mr.Herman recommended me to study Ruy Lopez lines to replace my King's gambit old games against the 1..... e5 player for open games. Good Luck!

My 2nd game went easy. But, my heartbeat run fast when I see Mr Yow Keen Mann playing tricky opening. My chess gurus always told me not to underestimate your opponent. Yes I did.
Playing Black against the White playing 1.a3 is not what I want. Since he didn't want show his color whether e4 or d4 player I'd chose to reply with 1.... Nf6, Indian system. The game went as below:-

1.a3 Nf6 2.c4 d4 (transpose to English? Sokolsky the Orang utans? let's see) 3.cxd4 Nxd4 4.Nc3 e6 5.e3 Be7 6.Nf3 0-0 7.Be2 c6 8.0-0 Qc7 9.d4 Nd7 10.e4 Nf4 11.Bxf4 Qxf4 12.Qc1!!
(hey! wacca gonna do dude!! fritz always shouted me HMMMM He thinking for the first time, Yes I'm thinking this time)

Come on, 12..... Qxc1 only stimulate the Rook to conquer the c-line. Then, 12.......g5 (again, I play risky move) 13.Qxf4 gxf4 14.Ne5 f6 15.Nxd7 Bxd7 16.Bf3 Kh8 17.Rab1 Rg8 18.g3 e5 19.d5 Bc5 20.dxc6 Bxc6 21.b4 Bb3 22.b5 Be8 23.Nd5 (I hate the Knight) Bd4 24.Nxf6 (i love to feed him with pawn blood) Rg6 25.Nxe8 Rxe8 26.a4 fxg3 27.hxg3 Rxg3+ 28. Kh1 ..... ... ..... (0-1)

Third round after lunch I met Michael Siong for the third times in my life. As I expected He use The Modern Defense against my 1.e4 game. But this time he was not transpose the game to Accelerated Dragon like he did to me before. Fritz teach me a lot how to play the correct openings and how to control the middle. But my weakness still at the end game. yeah,,, i need to do a lot of homework for this.

1.e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.Nc3 d6 4.Be3 Nd7 5.Bc4 e5 6.Nge2 Ngf6 7.f3 0-0 8.Qd2 exd4 9.Nxd4 Nc5
10.0-0-0 Be6 11.Nxe6 Nxe6 12.Bh6 a6 13.h4 b5 14.Bxe6 fxe6 15.Ne2 Qe7 16.Nd4 Qf7 17.Kb1
c5 18.Bxg6 Kxg6 19.Ne2 d5 20.exd5 exd5 21.g4 d4 22.h5 gxh5 23.gxh5 Kh8 24.Nf4 Ne4!
(phsyco freak!!!!) 25.Ng6+ Qxg6 26.hxg6 Nxd2+ 27.Rxd2 Rxf3 28.Rxh7+ Kg8 29.b3 Re8
30.Rdh2 Re6 31.g7 Rg3....... (shit! this guy know I can't beat for the ending, he left his chair lol)
(0-1) honored lost.

My fourth game against Mohd Ilyas bin Mohd Ramdzan (1366) was quite unique to me. He played 1.e4, i played 1....c5, but his style of attacking my defence was really passionate me. This was first time my Dragon variant of Sicilian being attacked with Double Knight tango. huh. It exhausted me. Ilyas lost was due to his miscalculation but I respect his art of attack. Beside too much time spent for the rapid game I'd notice that my rival quite nervous to perform the tactical line and too much careful sometimes become careless. Good job bro. Lucky you're not able to smell my blunder step. Nah, I show u a part of our game..

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 g6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 Bg7 6.Qd1 d6 7.Bc4 Nc6 8.0-0 0-0 (Lucky he was not using the Yugoslav Attack) 9.Qe1 Bg4 10.Nd2 Ne5 11.Nd5 Rc8 12.Bb3 h6 13.Nf4 g4
14.f3 Bh5 15.Nh3 Ng6 16.Nc4? Nh8 17.Ne3 Qb3 18.Kh1 Bg6 19.Ng4 Qc7 20.Bxg5 Nxg4 21.fxg4 hxg5 22.Nxg5 Bxb7 23.Bxa1 Rxf7 24.Rxf7 Bxf7 25.Nxf7

Fighting the NM KamalAriffin bin Wahiddudin (2147) on the board was uneasy for the unrated player like me. The only satisfaction I had is show-off my strength until the middle. Huh. his time is running out. o.33 mins while my time still 15minutes left. The Scandinavian game going wrong at the middle.

My last round was against a young rated player,Ahmad Arif bin Abd Rahim (1264). Oh God, He used my attacking style to break the Dragon variant of Sicilian. But what went wrong to him at the end game? A blunder move he made when I played the counter-attack. To him i express my respect. Malaysian need a lot of young player like him.
